Barcelona
In the last 3 to 4 years Barcelona can probably claim the title of top dogs in Spain. They have won the Spanish
league 3 times since 2006 and have also claimed the UEFA Champions League twice during this period. However,
Barcelona has long been one of the top teams in Spain and, along with Real Madrid, they are considered one of the
dominant two soccer teams in the country. Over the years they have claimed many trophies and this includes the
Spanish league title on no fewer than 20 occasions and the Spanish Cup 25 times. They are also considered one of
the top teams in Europe and have won the European Cup/Champions League 3 times, with the last few years being their
most successful period in the tournament. Barcelona was founded as far back as 1899 and virtually from the start of
their history they were a successful team with their first trophy being the Spanish Cup in 1909. They continue to
be a top team in both Spain and Europe and are generally considered one of those that has a good chance of trophy
winning success at the start of each season.
Real Madrid
In terms of trophies won, Real Madrid is by far one of the best team in Spain. They were founded in 1902 and by
1905 they had claimed their first trophy, when they won the Spanish Cup. Since this time they have had trophy
winning success on a regular basis and during their history have won a record 31 Spanish league titles as well as
being the runner-up on a further 17 occasions. They can also lay claim to being the most successful European soccer
club and they top the all time list of European Cup/Champions League winners. They have taken the trophy 9 times in
total and the famous team of the 1950’s won the European Cup for the first five years it was played. Over the years
they have attracted some of the best players in the world to play for them and this continues to the present day
with players of the caliber of Cristiano Ronaldo, Iker Casillas and Kaka currently turning
